The program queried me whether I want the program to continue ‘learning’. The result it gave was not even close to the real content. Doing Java on NetBeansIDE & Command Line

NetBeansIDE compiler runs on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and Solaris. NetBeans IDE is open-source & free (http://www.netbeans.org/index.html). Using the NetBeansIDE compiler for Java is way much easier than typing directories to get to your java folder. Perhaps you are wondering about doing things both ways; one compiling & running through the command line & the other through NetBeansIDE compiler. Well, you may want to do so just to see the difference between the two ways. I did it after a few tries & when I tried to run the HelloWorldApp from NetBeansIDE after compiling the exact same file on the command line Java, the results does not come out as its supposed too with warnings like “at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass1(Native Method)” & a few more lines instead of the simple “Hello World!”.

To fix it, you can add or take away the below few lines line from the source code on HelloWorldApp.java file:

/** Creates a new instance of HelloWorldApp */
public HelloWorldApp() {
}


Then build it again & run it! I reckon it’s because the command line Java that compiled it previously may have somehow altered how the NetBeansIDE sees the file. The codes are perfect but the proper result can’t be seen on the NetBeansIDE. It’s just for the heck of it, you know, because I wanted to see which way; NetBeansIDE or Command Line Java is better to use. Sun Microsystems recommend the NetBeansIDE compiler probably because it looks good for you. Lol. No, compiler is versatile & works with C/C++ & Ruby too! I would use NetBeansIDE for Java programming from now onwards but will resort to Java programming on the command line (DOS/CMD) when I want to see the results on; well, a real command line. I really have no idea whether any of my future application or programs made with Java language will be designed to yield results like “Hello World!” on Dos/CMD. *snigger*

Hello World Java Program Issues Resolved

The first thing I encountered was that the installer installed the Java Development Kit (JDK) in the program files of my computer’s c: drive. Making the source file is the usual cut & paste but I saved it into the Java folder in the c: drive program files. Otherwise I can’t see it in the CMD (command prompt) when I type dir. Another problem was to compile the source file. The Hello World tutorial for Windows (http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/cupojava/win32.html) assumes that one has installed the JDK perfectly.

Mine was not perfect so I had to try to find a solution in the installation notes for JDK Windows on the Java.Sun.com website. So I did the below & restarted the computer then continued with the Hello World tutorial where I left it. The computer chugged the data for a few splendid seconds; it was a happy sound for me, the source file successfully compiled! Note that I installed the jdk1.6.0_10 so its how one should add the PATH value in the User Variables; according to the JDK version.

How do I set the PATH permanently?

To set the PATH permanently, add the full path of the jdk1.6.0_\bin directory to the PATH variable. Typically this full path looks something like C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_\bin.

Set the PATH as follows on Microsoft Windows:

a. Click Start > Control Panel > System on Windows XP or Start > Settings > Control Panel > System on Windows 2000.

b. Click Advanced > Environment Variables.

c. Add the location of bin folder of JDK installation for PATH in User Variables and System Variables. A typical value for PATH is:
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_\bin

Well, so much for following the Hello World tutorial instructions, at least for the above mentioned particular parts. Without some basic ingenuity of knowing how files are organized / arranged in the OS & drive; & persistence for trying to find a solution at the correct place, I would have not made it through my first Java tutorial.

Dockers are a very popular range of pants, especially in San Francisco, US. Choosing the JDK Installation

You know, I just downloaded the Java Development Kit (JDK) from Java.Sun.com. Downloading the JDK can be quite a hassle especially to newbies like me who do not know which package to download. On the download page itself, there is shown about 5 or so types of download for the JDK. Just choose the first one; Java Platform Standard Edition (Java SE) development kit to make your life easier.

I installed the JDK onto my computer. Note that my computer does not have the Windows XP SP2 installed. Please don’t ask me why. *chuckle* The Java installer is going to tell you that the JDK works best with the SP2. Yeah, whatever; I just installed it, regardless. So, once again starting out learning to program is with a Hello World tutorial.

Not the Typical Welcome Email from Sun Microsystems

I just signed up with Sun Microsystems Java tutorial website the other day & was awaiting their reply email. Instead of a welcome to Sun reply email; guess what kind of email was sent to me? It was the “You are suspected as a Terrorist *(@^!%@** because a name similar to yours; Abas bin Sulaiman (a terrorist)” is in the US Federal Government files. I don’t recall how it’s called; some kind of no deal with terrorist list. Good thing I was not given when to respond to the email or we’ll target your house with a laser death ray from a US war satellite kind of thing.

I reckon my home being targeted with a laser death ray is unlikely. *chuckle* Good! Heck, Sun Microsystems don’t even put me on their payroll for me to confirm my identity. I will do it eventually just to show that I’m not the mentioned terrorist. Maybe I’m not the only one. It’s possible. Somebody named John Agent 47 Edwards will probably receive the same email as I did too! It seems like Sun Microsystems is taking a cautious step with who is allowed to enter its online domains. Well, actually it does not matter for me because I recall going onto a Sun Microsystems domain by login only once to view a Java programming tutorial.

I’m still not doing the tutorial just yet because it’s a pretty advanced topic & not to my interest at the moment. When I want to do it, then I would probably have already replied to the “I confirm that I am not a Terrorist” email from Sun Microsystems. Where did Sun Microsystems pull out the file? Perhaps some automatic profile background checker of theirs pulled it out from a US government website. Anyway, I sent the confirmation email to Sun Microsystems yesterday stating that I am not the terrorist & awaiting a reply from them. Hopefully, my case shall be closed in a good way.

Hello World C/Cpp Program Simplified

Recently I just wrote my first itsy bitsy little program called “Hello World”. Well, actually it was more of a cut & paste experience for me. Anyway, I spent a few hours trying to figure how to work the DevC++ compiler; a free & easy-to-use compiler uses a Windows interface. I downloaded & installed it recently from Bloodshed.net. Note* You may want to download the top most option on the site which is the newest version. You can also opt for the NetBeans IDE versatile compiler; it works with Java & Ruby too!

No problems with installing it; same for other windows applications. Firstly, the compiler will look as boring as a Windows 95 predecessor. So, the first thing for you to do is to find a place to write the code. Open a source file by clicking on the rectangular that looks like a 2 dimensional flat piece of paper (shown in below figure). Its ok, it took me quite a while too.

How it took me so long to do the “Hello World” program was because I was reading the tutorial at TutorialsPoint.com which was sourced from Tutorialized.com. Yes scrutiny is necessary to actually find good quality tutorials on the sites. The more tutors options the better to help keep your self open minded so you may want to find some good ones. The tutorial is to look at the Hello World program’s structure & the tutorial won’t tell you that you the codes won’t work in DevC++ because the code is not finished.

Yeah, the two sites deserve the blame. You fortunate reader can simply go to the C:\Dev-Cpp\Templates & open the Hello_cpp or Hello_c file. Cut & paste the codes in each file into the DevC++ on to two separate source files. You may want to do both so that you can basically see the difference between C coding & C++ coding. Click on Execute then Compile & Run. Send it to your desktop so you can click on the applications whenever you want to feel good about having made your first C & C++ programs!

It is partly due to the article I read on somebody’s blog yesterday about a funny hacker threatening some folks on IRC, not that I use IRC. Yes, so I finally, after years of not using a firewall on my pc, installed one today. Why had I been reluctant to install one before & why had I decided to install one today? Well, the answer to the first question lies in the fact that I had once used the free firewall program from ZoneAlarm, its touted by the company to be the best in the world today & its still free like it ever was when first introduced to internet users.

I used to have it installed on my computer for about a week but I got tired of answering the pop-ups asking me whether the program is authorized to go online or not. Heck, even now as I write, the program is doing its pop-up, we are protecting you routine. You can choose to just tick the “Don’t show this dialog again” & press OK. I liked the Kasperky Internet Security Suite as it seemed much smarter without the frequent Pop-up clearance checks but one would have to shell out about $60 for it.

Tough to Find the Free Lectures Podcasts on UC Davis Website

I spent hours browsing about the UC Davis website, looking for free courses/lectures on podcast. UC Davis is touted to offer podcasts on lectures, student activities, & etc. I just saw a video online about it & thought that it could be worth to take a look at it. Come on, after all it’s free education! So I went over to the UCDavis.edu website.

As like any large education institution, the amount of information provided on the website is overwhelming especially since there are a lot of interesting things to distract you. You won’t actually see a banner or ad showing “click here for your free podcast lectures!” Come to think of it, I wished there was some similar banner on the site. It would save free lecture podcast searchers like me some grievance. By doing a site search, I got to the Podcast home web page.

I thought my work was done & I could just relish the free lectures. Nope. It did not happen. No video layout going on like on Revver or YouTube. After a few moments browsing about, I recall reading a note informing that podcast lectures can be found in the MyUCDavis course web site & open the folder for the lecture recordings. Aha, so you have to sign-up first. Ok, no problem.

You may want to click on the MyUCDavis link at the top right of the UCDavis.edu website. You can login as a guest. Then oh, heck; I still can’t find the free podcast lectures! Maybe you can do it & give me a holla. I swear I heard the university representative in the video mentioned that it was available for the public! Making the podcast easier to access would be much appreciated!

Murderously Inhuman Acts in Frontier(s) Movie

Frontier(s) looks to be one of the best horror films in 2008. The suspense & realism of grotesque scenes are comparable to the highly vivid horror movies like Hostel & Saw. The Frontier(s) movie starts off with a group of people escaping the riots happening in a city more akin to adventure movies or one with a political struggle. Little does suspect that it would evolve into a full blown horror depicting human insanity. I find such movies like Frontier(s) to be too grotesque & murderously inhuman. Even the eerie background noise on the movie website scares me!

Surprisingly, the movie is unrated. There really should be some form of restriction, barring children to watch the movies. I would not watch the movie even though there might be a cinema just opposite my home showing the movie on the select theater listings. However, my younger sister likes such movies a lot. She has a whole DVD collection of extremely grotesque horror movies & often watches the movies at the cinema too. Once I asked her why she likes to watch such extreme horror movies. She told me that she likes the immense suspense & surprise factor of the movies. I am sure she will want to have the Frontier(s) movie in her collection too!

IEL Returns to PR3 Once Again!

Oh, Whooppee! Google decided to return a PR3 to the blog. Excellent! I wish I knew the reason. I do hope Google does the same for the rest of my blogs too soon. I have a new content strategy in plan to preserve the rank bestowed upon them by Google & attract the new Google search spider. It’s been a turbulent roller coaster ride for me when my blogs had their PR stripped by Google. I just wished the PR of blogs would not fluctuate so dramatically.

It’s just not fair for the bloggers not to mention to advertisers too! There are some really good blogs on the internet that have had their PR taken away! Google seems to be like a robot: just following orders & just doing what’s best for Google; & of course, the beloved users of Google search engine too. Is there an anti dust society club that I could join? To my surprise & cut the story short, my computer works like brand new after the cleaning session (it was half a year ago) & still going strong without problems today! Hence, the first thing you should do is practice good computer maintenance. Without hardware problems, you would not have to worry about the hard drive in particular going kaput.

Ensure that air circulation is good in your personal computer & there are enough fans to ventilate the interior. Diagnostic software with a thermometer function for your hard drive will be a good feature too! Try to maintain a temperature of a cool below 20c or at least room temperature. My room is about 26c to 28c so I guess my PC interior is slightly cooler since it's encased. Also, once or twice a year to clean the dust off your computer’s fans & interior, including on the hard disk itself. Embedded dust tends to have thermal retention & blocks good air flow. In a near future article, I will inform you on some more tips for data recovery. Before I forget, also use a surge protector so that your computer does not go up in smoke during electrical surges, be it from the house electrical socket, phone lines, or even cable.
