Lenovo Ideapad U330 a Serious Challenger to Dell XPS M1330 Throne

Looks alone will not get the job done. Dell XPS M1330has a serious challenger for the 13 inch laptop performance throne. The threat is so serious that after you look at the performance figures, you will actually overlook it’s slightly chunky appearance & the fact that it’s colored black! The challenge is coming from the China based computers manufacturer than bought over IBM in the recent years; LENOVO. I reckon Lenovo now has finally got it right when it comes down to small & powerful laptops. Forget about the overpriced Lenovo ThinkPad x300 of last year. ASUS N10JC: Netbook with Dedicated Graphics is not as Good

So, a netbook with dedicated graphics is not as good as I thought it would be after all. I am referring to the ASUS N10JC which utilizes the Intel Atom processor & a Nvidia NVIDIA 9300M GS with 256MB DDR2 memory. It’s a 10” screen ‘corporate’ netbook from ASUS. As you can se, by visiting the ASUS N10JC review on the notebookreview website, the netbook does not show significant improvement for doing HD videos & games. Is it worth paying the higher price?

Well, what can one expect from a sub-laptop that uses an Intel Atom processor? Sure, perhaps the Vista will run smooth but the Intel Atom is no Intel Core 2 Duo! Unless you want a more sleek looking netbook, perhaps it is best to stick with the integrated graphics card offerings from ASUS like the EEEpc 1000H/HA. One will be better off buying a small laptop using a Intel Core 2 Duo & dedicated graphics card combo or AMD Puma latops.

Some features of the ASUS N10JC ‘Corporate’ Netbook:

• Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor
• 160GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive (Seagate 5400.4)
• NVIDIA 9300M GS with 256MB DDR2 memory and Intel GMA950
• 1GB of DDR2 RAM (667MHz)
• Windows XP Home operating system
• 10.2” WSVGA Glossy LED-Backlit 1024 x 600 LCD
• Ports: 3 USB 2.0, HDMI,VGA monitor out, headphone jack, microphone input, 8 in 1 SD card reader (SDHC compatible), Kensington lock slot, Ethernet 10/100, ExpressCard/34
• Webcam (1.3 MP)
• Battery: 11.1v 4800mAh 53Wh 6-cell battery
• Wireless: 802.11b/g
• Two-year Limited Global Warranty
• Size: 10.8 (W) x 8.25 (D) x 1.46 (H)

Trendy Looking 8GB Flash Drives

Man, thumb drives a.k.a. flash drives are becoming bigger in storage size, prettier, & also cheaper nowadays! Take a look at the trendy looking ones from ADATA as in the above pictures. They are 8GB models. You can choose different colors or buy all of them to complement your dressing styles. They cost about $25 - $35 each from moresales.com.my. I was browsing on the website because I thought I had some extra cash to buy one. Anyway, the 512mb flash drive that I am using now is a bit outdated & the vast space will come in handy.

After I paid some of my bills, it looks like a stylish 8GB flash drive purchase for me will have to wait. Anyway, my younger sister recently brought home her pc from university hostel & is not using it much at the moment. Hence, I reckon it can be used as a general extra storage device as well instead of me buying a flash drive. The pc can also be included into my home network of computers. Still, unless I figure out how to network the computers to share files, an 8GB flash drive will be useful for large file transfers.

Strange Problem with LAN & Wireless Router Connection

Today I was doing up my younger sister’s pc which she brought home from her university hostel recently. I cleaned it & hooked it up to the wireless router by LAN to try to network her pc. It’s supposed to be plug & play when attaching a pc to a wireless router via LAN. Well, it is not so the case for my younger sister’s computer; strange problem. It’s an Intel Celeron with 512mb of ram. The specs should not be an issue. Anyway, it tried everything including calling up the Aztech tech help over the phone. I changed the default connection, checked the LAN connection, put the obtain IP address detection & DNS server address to auto; everything!

It’s not like I am using the wrong cable like in the side picture! The techie informed me that I should reformat the pc & reinstall all the drivers for the pc then try again. Well, maybe another day because my younger sister still has plenty of data in her pc’s hard drive. Heck knows when I will be able to proceed on the task. I hope I get to fix up the situation soon because my father who knows pretty much nothing about computers is using my email account to receive lots of mails from his associate. I hope I get to fix up his own personal email account on my sister’s currently unused pc for his convenience.

Making Sense of a Asus EEE PC1000H Netbook Purchase

Looking at the myriad of netbooks available nowadays, I start to become attracted to having a small portable albeit low functionality laptop by my side when outside my studio room & the house. Sure, at the very least, I will have the ability to surf the internet & sync the netbook with my Bluetooth gadgets. Netbooks like the Asus EEE PC1000H (USD$>450) have wireless b/g/n & Bluetooth connectivity. Another contender that can be seen on the netbook horizon nowadays is the Acer One (the cheapest netbook in the market ATM: USD$350 plus) & Lenovo IdeaPad S10 (about the same price as the above Asus model). For avid mobile internet surfers; having a netbook sure beats lugging about a few extra kilos of laptop equipment everyday.

Nowadays, netbooks are becoming more useful as the storage space becomes decent sized of 80GB plus. I am considering buying an Asus EEE PC1000H with windows XP. I could use the 80GB hard drive to as a backup hard drive for my pc, upgrade to 2GB memory, & chuck it into my backpack wherever I go to be constantly connected to the internet via wireless b/g/n, write some documents, read emails, blog, do some programming, & perhaps even attempt some basic photo editing! Yes, buying an Asus EEE PC1000H seems to make more sense to me now. Perhaps I will buy the Asus EEE PC1000HA because it is at a cheaper price (about USD $50 less) without the wireless N & Bluetooth but with 160GBof HDD space!

Some specifications of the ASUS Eee 1000H:

• Intel Atom N270 (1.6GHz, 512KB cache)
• 1GB DDR2-400 SO-DIMM
• 80GB 5400RPM 2.5” SATA Hard Drive
• Intel GMA950 Integrated Graphics
• 10” WSVGA 1024x600 LED-backlit screen, 1.3MP webcam
• Windows XP Home (comes with ASUS recovery DVD)
• Atheros wireless 802.11b/g/n mini PCI-Express card, integrated Bluetooth 2.0
• 3 USB 2.0 ports, 10/100 ethernet jack, MMC/SD card reader, mic in, headphone out, VGA out, Kensington lock slot
• 6-cell 6600mAh battery (Asus claims 7.5hr. battery life)
• 1-year Global Hardware Warranty
• Dimensions: 10.5”x7.5”x1.5”, 3.2lbs. with battery
• Retail Price: $449 ($649 at launch)

HP tx2500z: Performing & Decently Priced Tablet PC to Consider

No, it’s not an upside down or wrong side up laptop. It is a tablet pc. A tablet pc looks like a laptop but it has a swiveling screen which you can write on digitally. It’s like having a laptop & a wacom tablet in a single device. The biggest hurdle for the tablet pc to be more popular than the laptop is its price. But the price factor is looking to be a thing of the past with the HP tx2500z.

In the past, tablet PCs cost about double that of any laptop. Now, you can buy the HP tx2500z for less than USD$1000 which is cheaper than many typical medium range laptops. Mind you, the performance is not too shabby too with the HP tx2500z. It’s got a more powerful AMD Turion X2 Ultra dual-core Mobile ZM-86 2.40GHz than its HP tx2000z predecessor, smaller 12” monitor, & an integrated ATI Radeon HD 3200 for graphics which is good enough for an entry level gaming experience.

The HP tx2500z has the following specs:

• Processor: AMD Turion X2 Ultra dual-core Mobile ZM-86 2.40GHz
• Screen: 12.1″ diagonal WXGA HP BrightView widescreen (1280 x 800)
• Memory: 3.00GB DDR2 RAM
• OS: Windows Vista Business 32-bit
• Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 3200
• Ports: Three USB 2.0 ports, an ExpressCard/34 slot, S-Video, VGA, Consumer IR, 5-in-1 digital media card reader, Microphone, 2-headphone ports (1-SPDIF), Modem port, Ethernet port
• Wireless: 802.11 a/b/g/n , BlueTooth
• HP Imprint Finish (Echo)
• Battery: 6-cell
• Microphone + Webcam
• FingerPrint Reader
• Input: Keyboard (101-keys), touchpad with on/off button, touch-screen display & Wacom active input
