ATV: A Deceivingly Dangerous Vehicle Type

Why do vehicle manufacturers still produce such dangerous ATVs? The answer is the very reason why there are businesses in the world; to make profit. Making a profit should not mean having to be unethical. Some vehicle manufacturers tend to put the notion of ‘what sells’ first over the safety of the user.

Just the other day there was some news about the son of a Hollywood celebrity who died in an accident while riding his ATV (All Terrain Vehicle). The ATV somehow rolled over & landed on his head! Common injuries associated with ATV rollovers include broken legs (tibia), broken arms, and devastating head and spinal cord injuries which could result in death.

ATVs are four wheeled vehicles, much like a hybrid between a car & a motorbike that can be used off road. Some have handling & seating configurations of a motorbike (tandem) while some types have that of similar to small cars (side by side). Regardless, these machines are much heavier than motorbikes & not something one can pick up easily once it has toppled over. ATVs are useful in farms, plantations, & be driven to explore the countryside. The use of ATVs is obviously beneficial, especially to outdoor pleasure seekers.

However, this vehicle type is deceivingly dangerous. One would expect a four wheeled vehicle to be stable but no, this vehicle, like the Yamaha Rhino ATV for example, can roll over even at low speeds. Don’t let the availability of the roll cage fool you as this safety feature is not fully effective without doors. Small wheels plus narrow body & the lack of doors is one very dangerous vehicle to drive. The Yamaha Rhino Rollover situation is so bad that the company have recalled more of its Rhino Side by Side (SxS) ATV vehicles.

There must be a way to make ATVs safer for people to use & the vehicle manufacturers who do not do so must be punished by the court of law. We are talking about people’s lives here!
